Popular Music Theory Level 2

Teachers help others realise their goals and ambitions. Our university-level teaching diplomas are comprehensive, practical and industry-relevant qualifications designed to equip you for peripatetic instrumental teaching. Focusing on teaching from a hands-on perspective, the course uses practical demonstrations and covers academic and sector-specific knowledge.

If you have passed this diploma you are entitled to use the letters standing for that diploma after your name. ATCL stands for Associate of Trinity College London.

Principles of Instrumental and Vocal Teaching is a diploma in which the depth of response is equivalent to that achieved on completion of the first year of a full-time undergraduate course at a higher education institution.

This qualification provides evidence that participants understand the main principles involved in instrumental/vocal teaching in the context of individual or small group lessons. Based on a combination of documented experience, personal research and critical reflection upon their own practice and that of others, they can plan and deliver activities designed to promote musical and technical development for individuals or small groups, demonstrating awareness of relevant professional protocol and legislation.

The performance skills specified for the teaching qualifications need to be complemented by a broad base of musical knowledge and understanding, which may or may not have been formally assessed (e.g. by theory grades or secondary school examinations).

A.I.R. works best when Bloom’s taxonomy is implemented.

  1. Remember – recollection of facts and concepts. This requires practice.
  2. Understand – discuss your findings in an open forum with your teacher. Identify fundamental concepts within
pieces of music that you are studying, recognise patterns within music theory, translate and transpose those
fundamentals to key elements of your studies
  3. Apply – use this information in new pieces. Can it expedite the learning process?
  4. Analyse – Relate your findings to an abundance of artists and pieces; identify differences; distinguish key
    factors
  5. Evaluate – Justify your choices. Evaluate your progression with your teacher constantly referring to the
    published descriptors
  6. Create – Produce your own original work – compositions, development and improvisation
