In support of International Women’s Day 2022, we caught up with Lucy and asked her a few questions.
Lucy Harne joined MLC Group in 2019 as Brand Manager. With over 15 years of business experience in both the retail and textile industry, including the delivery of multi-million pound projects for one of the world’s biggest retailers, Lucy is perfectly placed to ensure that we stay on track and support the brand as we continue to grow.
What activities do you enjoy away from work?
I enjoy gardening, reading, theatre, singing and exercise..
What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
It’s a day to celebrate women’s achievements and raise awareness about women’s equality. It’s important to remember how far we’ve come but also highlight the changes we still need to see.
How do you use your experience and knowledge to drive forward the vision of MLC?
I think strategically and love to create and deliver a plan. I use my knowledge to put new ideas into action.
What professional/personal challenges have you overcome?
I’ve always had a strong work ethic, thinking I can do anything and everything. I once worked for a company that recognised my work ethic and gradually began increasing my responsibilities. I became completely overwhelmed by the additional workload. Not only was I working extra hours to get everything done but I was burning myself out in the process. After some self-reflection, I realised I couldn’t do it all by myself and asked for help, which was hard for me to admit. I can now admit when I need help and that there’s no shame in asking for it because everyone needs a helping hand at some point in their lives.
How can we as a society encourage more women to pursue entrepreneurship or senior leadership roles in their career?
Committing to progressing more women into senior leadership roles and more support for women who want to have families and have a career. The UK has the second highest costs for childcare in the world!
What is the most important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?
Be open to opportunities when they present themselves. They’ll make you uncomfortable and your initial response may be that you’re not ready. But remember: growth and comfort never co-exist.
If you could have dinner with three inspirational women, dead or alive, who would they be and why?
