Preparing For A Music Exam

Preparing for a music exam can be a daunting task. Here are some tips that will help you.

Taking an exam will no doubt be the end of a long study of work coupled with countless hours of practice. In some cases it might the milestone at the end of an entire year’s work. The following tips will help you through the exam.

  1. Ensure that you have your book/s, CDs, portfolio, sticks and candidate appointment slip with you before leaving your home
  2. Research the exam centre – call them if needs be. They’ll be only too happy to assist you
  3. Arrive in good time
  4. Warm up
  5. Drink plenty of water
  6. Don’t be afraid to say hi to the examiner. They’re human! A couple seconds of conversation could relax you immeasurably
  7. Adjust the kit if needs be. Snare and hi-hat height, cymbal position and so on
  8. Ensure you have a brief (but necessary) sound check
  9. Ensure you can see the sheet music – place the music stand in a position that suits you
  10. Take a deep breath, relax and enjoy yourself
